Collection from the Estate of Michael Meinecke

Until his early death in 1995 Michael Meinecke was director of the Museum of Islamic Art, having previously founded the branch office of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Damascus.

The historically significant residence of Raqqa was unearthed under his direction. Michael Meinecke’s well-organized photographic collection focuses on the architecture of Syria’s historical mosques, medrasas, mausoleums and wells, with special emphasis placed on their art-historical value, architectural decoration and inscriptions.

His volume “Mamluk Architecture in Egypt and Syria”, published in 1992, continues to set standards.
