The area of Suwayqat Ali has been severely affected during the armed conflict in Aleppo between 2012 and 2016. This documentation work was developed between August 2019 and February 2020, and covers analyzing the urban morphology for three periods of time (1932, 2001, 2019), reviewing the architectural layout and building history (including the change in function) of 38 historic buildings and facilities, and assessing the overall damage in the area.

Further Funding for the Interactive Heritage Map of Syria

Date: 26 January 2021

NEWS

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has made a grant to continue supporting the Museum für Islamische Kunst in its endeavor to document, archive and present Syrian cultural heritage by using participatory methods.

Since July 2018, the Interactive Heritage Map of Syria has been documenting immaterial aspects of Syrian cultural heritage, made possible through a significant grant by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and brings the focus back to the people who create their cultural heritage. The aim of the project is to present cultural forms of expression, oral traditional knowledge and personal memories from Syria in a holistic way in order to combine material and immaterial heritage. The new grant will allow the team to further maintain and develop its digital platform and build on the success of the past two years in 2021.

For over five decades, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which is based in New York City, has supported higher educational institutions and cultural organizationsthroughout the world.

We are pleased with the continuous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The support is essential for transforming the digital platform of the Syrian Heritage Archive into a living platform of exchange for the Syrian community and beyond, by offering a unique and innovative approach to the holistic preservation of both immaterial and material heritage that not only includes scholarly research but the personal and collective memory of Syrians
Dr. Stefan Weber, director Museum for Islamic Art in Berlin

The Interactive Heritage Map of Syria project has created an important and vibrant community network for the documentation and presentation of Syrian culture that is unique in its kind. The team works closely with the other projects of the Syrian Heritage Initiative of the Museum für Islamische Kunst and is responsible for the development of an interactive plat-form that presents the work of the Syrian Heritage Initiative and invites everyone to participate in the documentation of Syrian heritage through various outreach activities. The platform offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about Syrian heritage, to express their own opinions and to view a selection of extensive database of the Syrian Heritage Archive in the gallery. Visitors can also access geographical data on Syria’s cultural heritage on an interactive map.
