Ruins of Balis with dismantling scaffolding for the minaret and the Euphrates in the background

Ruins of Balis with dismantling scaffolding for the minaret and the Euphrates in the background

Before the Euphrates valley was flooded for the Assad-Lake in the 1970ies, the Ayyubid minaret of Balis was carefully deconstructed piece by piece, as evidenced by the wooden scaffolding. The French excavation rebuilt it not far away. In the background the river and some village houses of Old-Maskana are visible.
